The thirteenth edition of the classic yacht regatta, organized by Club Marítimo de Mahón anticipates the participation of high-caliber sailboats. The NY50 Spartan (1913), the lone survivor in its class, will sail from the United States to Menorca to compete against some prized possessions of the naval patrimony such as Moonbeam IV (1914), Zinita (1927) and Rowdy (1916)

The XIII Copa del Rey de Barcos de Época will be held in the surroundings of Menorca from the 24th through the 27th of August, welcoming once again some crown jewels of the international naval patrimony.

Among the thirteen boats that have already confirmed their participation in the regatta, being organized exclusively by Club Marítimo de Mahón, the Dutch yacht, Zinita (1927), 20 meters in length; the British yacht, Rowdy (1916), with the same length and a participant from the 2015 edition; and the American yacht, Spartan (1913), 22 meters in length and the only survivor of the nine boats that were constructed in its class, NY50, at the beginning of the 20th Century, known as “The New York 50”.

The fleet, as is customary in the regatta in Mahón, will be divided into five classes, since “with almost complete certainty, the Big Boats category will be formed,” as Nacho Marra, General Manager of Club Marítimo de Mahón and the head organizer of the event, explains. Although they have not yet officially registered, the captain of Moonbeam IV (1914), 30 meters in length and one of the most preserved period boats in the world, has informed that barring any unforeseen change, they intend to defend their 2015 title against the “younger brother”, Moonbeam III.

The sailboats constructed before 1950, belonging to the Época (“Period”) class, will form two groups according to their riggings (Cangreja, having trapezoidal sails, and Marconi, having triangular sails), while the Clásicos (“Classics”) (from 1950 through 1975) and the Espiritu de Tradición (“Spirit of Tradition”) will form the remaining two categories. According to the Notice of Race, the courses may be “In the Port of Mahón, its vicinity and the surrounding waters of Menorca,” and there will be a classification established for each group and class. Some classes will have two daily competitions. The organization will solicit the perceived authorization from the Port Authority and the Harbormaster to situate the finish line inside of the Port of Mahón in some of the regattas, weather permitting.

La Copa del Rey de Barcos de Época is a regatta which counts toward the Mare Nostrum Trophy and the Spanish Classics Championship.
