Livia, Crivizza, Germania V, Esperanza, El Oro, Algol V, Alitán III and Marguerite are participating for the first time in the regatta, attracted by the prestige and the good atmosphere of the race organised by the Club Marítimo de Mahón.
The Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoca will once again bring together the best classic fleet in the Mediterranean. The regatta organised by the Club Marítimo de Mahón will once again be in its twentieth edition the benchmark event for classic sailing in Spain and one of the most important on the European circuit.
The figures, with just one month to go until the start of the Copa del Rey Repsol, point to a spectacular edition, as a total of 43 boats have already certified their presence, including big boats such as the Tuiga (1909), the Mariska (1908), the Viveka (1929) and the Lady Anne (1912), which are over a century old.
Among the participants, there are several boats that will be competing for the first time in Menorca, attracted by the prestige of the regatta and the good atmosphere of the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoca.
This is the case of the Livia, a 42-foot yawl designed by Herreshof, built by the Mallorcan shipyard Myabca and launched in Port de Pollença in 1964. This boat has been recovered by the Fundación Vela Clásica de España and, after a fantastic maintenance and refit work, she is once again sailing the seas.
Another boat recovered for the competition is the Crivizza, a Bermudian sloop built in 1966 that Ariella Cattai and Gigi Rolandi fell in love with as soon as they saw it stranded on the docks of Viareggio. After intense renovation work, which included a new deck and reinforcement of the mast foot, the boat has been taking part in the competition since last year.
Even older, from 1955, is the Germania V. It is a 20.10 metre yawl designed by Abeking & Rassmussen and built in steel, as it was commissioned by Alfred Krupp, a member of the family of German industrialists who created the Krupp consortium. In its early years it was sailed as a racing yacht, obtaining numerous successes, to later become a pleasure yacht in the waters of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean and the United States. Its current owner, Ulrich Pfänder, has regularly refitted and upgraded the boat.
Other boats that will be visiting the Copa del Rey Repsol de Barcos de Epoca for the first time are the classics Esperanza (1963) and El Oro (1975) and also Algol V (1978), Alitán III (1978) and Marguerite (2023), three units that will compete in the Spirit of Tradition, a category reserved for boats of modern construction, but which respect the classic style.
The regatta, which will be held between 27 and 31 August, is once again part of The Mediterranean Champions Cup circuit, along with Les Régates Royales, Vele d'Epoca di Imperia, Argentario Sailing Week, Les Voiles d'Antibes and the Illes Balears Clàssics, of the Club de Mar Mallorca.
